The Mayor Takes a Shot...
at me. In this Sunday's Asheville Citizen-Times :
I am not her only opponent, but apparently I have been dubbed the only viable (read as chance of winning the primary) opponent to the financial juggernaut known as the Bellamy campaign. What this says about politics in Asheville is open to interpretation. There are 72,000+ people in this city; how I ended up as the (most likely) challenger to Mayor Bellamy is beyond me. But I guess this is how things work.
Bellamy likes to point out that she is a true local, and by extension of that logic, she cares more about the city than us transplants and interlopers, and that those who do not use standard political rhetoric cannot be taken seriously because they refuse to enter into the conversation in a legitimate way. What is "legitimate" is a hybrid of advertising-speak and legalese. This of course has nothing to do with actual governance or ability, but rather is all about inflating a sense of competence through rhetoric and positioning, and presenting oneself before the public in the same manner--at its core--as one would hawk the superiority of one brand of laundry soap over another. If probing this makes me a joke, then I am more than happy to be a joke.
Speaking from a purely strategic point of view, I wonder why she would even acknowledge me as a candidate at all. I mean, really, she is the incumbent; she has out-raised me more than 100:1; she has the media at her disposal and on and on. If I was in her position I would just ignore me, but hey, I am just a one man campaign here; I don't have the benefit of political experience or learned counsel.
Maybe this will make things interesting after all...
“If my opponent chose to do this as a joke, I don't see my city and hometown as a joke, I'm going to give it all I have,” Bellamy said.

More Things I Learned...
at the South Asheville Rotary Club Candidate Forum:
I am taller than Mayor Bellamy. I don't think Ryan Croft actually exists. Old people don't like me. Kelly Miller should be a used car salesman. Cecil Bothwell keeps it real. Carl Mumpower is crazy in a funny way, or funny in a crazy way, I'm not sure which. Esther Manheimer is still hot, she is also a lawyer. Gordon Smith ended The Troubles. Robin Cape is on HUB. Cesar Romero is not that Cesar Romero (unfortunately). J Neal Jackson is younger than me.

Answers...
to the Mountain Xpress candidate thingy. I am the only one who dares to tell the truth, but feel free to read the others anyway.
